The Reading Success Network
The Reading Success Network (RSN) is one of several projects of the national Comprehensive Centers Network. The purpose of the RSN is to improve student reading achievement by developing a national network of trainers of teacher-coaches who support classroom teachers' efforts to provide powerful instruction in reading.
Low-Performing Schools Initiative
On May 3, 2000, the President issued an Executive Order on Actions to Improve Low-Performing Schools. The order, which is the catalyst for the Low Performing Schools Initiative, directs the U.S. Department of Education to use its resources to assist states and districts in turning around low-performing schools. The CC Network plays an important role in this initiative. In response, the CC Network formed a committee that defined how, in manner similar to RSN, the Comprehensive Centers Network could respond to the challenge of addressing the need to improve low-performing schools.
English Language Learner Activities
In response to an increasing need to provide services focused on English language learner (ELL) issues, the CC Network is building its capacity, increasing communication with OBEMLA and state directors, and enhancing the quality of technical assistance provided schools, districts, and SEAs. In so doing, the Network created an ELL specific listserve which serves to identify CC Network staff with expertise, responsibility for, or an interest in professional development relative to ELL issues and needs. The listserve is a vehicle for information sharing, potential staff exchanges, networking, and to some extent professional development. Currently, approximately 45 people from across the CC Network participate in the listserve.
Safe and Drug Free Schools and Communities (SDFSC) Activities
The SDFSC Program is administered by the U.S. Department of Education and includes activities to prevent violence and illicit drug use by youth. The Comprehensive Centers, in partnership with the U.S. Department of Education, provide state and local grantees of the SDFSC Act with professional development, technical assistance and
information on early intervention and prevention programs that work. The Centers' services are focused on helping local grantees follow the four Principles of Effectiveness: conducting a thorough needs assessment, establishing measurable objectives, selecting research-based programs or strategies that meet identified needs, and continually evaluating the program's effectiveness. The Centers also help state and local grantees remain updated on federal issues and priorities. For more information about the Centers' activities click on any of the links below:
